You are the elves’ last hope. Outside the town walls lurk monsters with the power to destroy anything in their path. Inside the walls, water and time are running out. Soon the ancient elf town of Eolis will vanish into eternity. Only you can save Eolis. No one else dares to venture beyond the walls, onto the World Tree, where towns and fortresses precariously await the whims of fate at the hands of the Evil.

Show notes

  • Unlock doors of legend on your journey through Faxanadu
  • NES Longplay
  • Introductions
    • I’m locking in on FA-XANADU and I’ll tell you why
  • Overview
    • Faxanadu is a side scrolling action role playing game very similar to The Adventures of Link but without a top down overworld. There is an overworld but it remains side scrolling
      • Which is something that could’ve helped Adventure of Link in my opinion.
  • Gameplay
    • This game has a weird start. Just watching a guy walk and only hearing his footsteps
    • Ring of Elf Trial - make sure you’re playing the game they want you to
    • Combat - Adventure of Link
      • I have a problem with hitbox detection on NES games
      • Has the bad jump, but without pits (well mostly)
      • Great magic system
    • Exploration - Hallways. Weird locking out of past locations because of keys/set resets
      • Land of Mist
    • Dungeons - Similar to Zelda, where you have to figure out what you need to solve, not every room matters.
    • Meditation save passwords
    • Pendant coding error - A justification for romhacks
  • Sequels and Spinoffs
    • Xanadu came first
      • MSX and computers it is a more basic version of this game. I think it would be hard to go back if you’re a fan of this game
      • Is Faxanadu a fancy way of saying Famicom Xanadu?
    • Xanadu Next
      • N-Gage in 2005 (also PC)
      • A 3D version of the Faxanadu concepts, but doesn’t feel or look similar. More following the trends of JRPGs at the time.
    • Tokyo Xanadu
      • Xanadu Next gameplay meets Persona
      • Available on Vita and PS4
    • This whole thing is a spinoff of the Dragon Slayer series. You guys may remember we played Legacy of the Wizard (DS IV) where you play as a family traversing a very complex underground cave with a ton of backtracking.
