061 · DOUBLE DRIBBLE
The crowd roars. The game is yours to win or lose. But to win you’ll need speed in the lane, touch for three pointers, muscle to power past picks, and the skill to crash the glass. And, if you break free underneath – watch out! Because now you can power home a rim rockin’ slam. For more NEStalgia as well as show notes for this episode visit www.NEStalgiacast.com
Show notes
- Thick of September 1987 - 15 GAMES this month for the NES
- Konami is at it again tackling a different sport. Track and Field came out in April 87
- Arcade first in 86 so not as much of a gap.
- Crazy microtransaction:
- The arcade version was a timed play, where after every minute of play, the game was owed a credit if the score was tied or the computer is ahead. However, if the live player was ahead, a "free" minute was earned. Many average players could earn the first free minute, but this became increasingly more difficult to do as making 3-point shots became virtually impossible over the course of gameplay.
- Talking points
- Jump timing mechanic
- Cutscene for Dunk or Jump (possibly Arcade only)
- Stealing the ball
- Enough choices? four teams (Boston Frogs, New York Eagles, Chicago Ox, Los Angeles Breakers), three levels of single-play difficulty, and four choices of quarter lengths.
- Did the inability to have NBA license hurt the game?
- Were you impressed by accuracy?
- Did it follow the rules well?
- later released in Japan in Disk Card format for the Family Computer Disk System under the title of Exciting Basketball.
- Double Dribble on Family Guy | Double Dribble Arcade Version | Playoff Edition for Genesis | Double Dribble Fast Break for iOS
