067 - SPY HUNTER
OUR THOUGHTS
MIKE
I first played Spy Hunter on an online website back in the early 2000’s. It was a name I had thought I heard before, but was likely just imagining James Bond. When I played it back then it was one of the more fun arcade experiences I had (even if I was playing online). I kept it up there with Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, and Q-Bert. Nowadays I’m not as sold. The gameplay loop is more fun than most arcade games, but it’s a little too generic (especially this NES port) to keep me interested. Games like Pac-Man really benefit from being completely different from the competition. Hundreds of clones will follow, but they are not Pac-Man. Spy Hunter doesn’t get that benefit. It’s fairly generic and future clones will actually get the chance to add necessary features like level variety, speed control, something more than a high-score, and enemies that aren’t just cars and helicopters. It’s a fun homage to one of my favorite franchises, James Bond. Unfortunately, it’s not much more than that.
THE VERDICT - NOT ESSENTIAL
